Youssef Chahine retrospective from May to June in Zurich, Basel and Bern

For decades, Youssef Chahine (1926–2008) was the central figure of Egyptian cinema. Inspired by neo-realism and melodrama as well as musicals, his films deal with crucial issues of Egyptian society – and to this day, they offer insights into the realities and dreams of the Arab world. With 37 features and five short films to his name he won many of the most prestigious awards, such as the Tanit d'Or at Carthage, the Silver Bear in Berlin and several lifetime achievement awards, in Venice and Cannes amongst others.

The Youssef Chahine retrospective runs from 16 May until end of June at Filmpodium Zurich and at Stadtkino Basel and as of 30 May at the cinema REX Bern. The film selection was made in cooperation with IAFFZ.

The Arab Film Festival Zurich is looking for new members for the programme delegation (honorary, 5-10%)

Starting in spring 2019, we are looking for new motivated members for our program delegation who would like to actively participate in the film selection for the next festival in 2020.

What we do:

  • The programme delegation searches for current Arabic films among filmmakers, distributors, production companies and other film festivals.
  • Manages the online submissions on our website.
  • Views and evaluates all films according to qualitative and dramaturgical criteria.
  • Pre-selects films for the festival and makes proposals for programme or thematic priorities.
  • Prepares the definitive film programme in cooperation with the president of the association and the management team of the Filmpodium,
  • Orders selected films and conducts correspondence with filmmakers, distributors or production companies.

What we offer:

  • With your commitment you shape the core of the festival: the film programme!
  • Exciting insights into the organisation of a film festival and Arab culture.
  • A strong national and international network in the (Arabic) film industry.
  • The opportunity to visit other (Arabic) film festivals and get accredited by our association. After arrangement incl. cover of expenses.
  • You can enjoy the actual festival to the full - then others will work.

What we expect from you:

  • Willingness to work with us until the next festival in November 2020 and even beyond.
  • The viewing of the films is an individual task and you can make your own schedule. But please don't underestimate the total effort or give up halfway through!
  • Technical & dramaturgical basic knowledge of film production in order to be able to judge the submitted films adequately and conscientiously.
  • Attend three to four meetings a year including a usually very long film pre-selection meeting.
  • Fluent communication in English. And if you also speak a little German, French or even Arabic, all the better.

Are you interested and would like to play an active role in shaping a film festival? Or do you have further questions? Then write a few lines about yourself and your background to the current head of the programme delegation:
