7th Arab Film Festival ZurichThe Arab Film Festival Zurich is back! Its seventh edition features five panel discussions, a master class and 24 feature-length films, as well as nearly 30 short films. These are works by Arab filmmakers, who are underrepresented in commercial cinema – and who are currently, in many instances, working in a conflict-ridden context where filmmaking is more than an artistic necessity.
In this edition of the festival, the work of Arab filmmakers comes into focus on-screen and off-screen. To promote intercultural exchange, to question roles, to immerse oneself in unknown worlds or to negotiate and endure different positions. The result is illuminating, quite literally: from 2 to 6 April, the Filmpodium Zurich and Frame will be lit up by a wide range of documentary, feature, short and animated films from the Arab cultural sphere.
I would like to thank the IAFFZ association, its honorary board members and the many volunteers who organize the Arab Film Festival Zurich with great commitment. To you, dear audience, I wish an unforgettable festival experience!

Corine Mauch
Welcome addressCorine Mauch, Mayor of the City of Zurich.
Dear festivalgoers, dear friends of the Arab Film Festival Zurich
This is the seventh time that the Arab Film Festival Zurich will take place, and it has many innovations in store. The most striking novelties are its shorter duration – five days instead of ten – and its simultaneous expansion to two cinemas or three screens: In addition to the traditional festival centre at Filmpodium, screens 3 and 5 at the Frame cinema will also present festival films.
Another new feature is the two-day Animation Lab, an industry event on 3 and 4 April, which is intended to promote animated films in the Arab world and Switzerland as well as to encourage the exchange of ideas among animation filmmakers. And on April 5 and 6, VR productions from the Arab world can be experienced at the Filmpodium Lounge.
In a change on the organisational level, the Filmpodium of the City of Zurich no longer co-produces the festival but continues to host it on generous terms, allowing us to benefit from the enormous know-how of its team.
This edition's focus countries are Sudan and Saudi Arabia. While Sudan is once again plagued by civil war after a short period of hope, the film industry in Saudi Arabia is currently flourishing thanks to cultural liberalization. However, strong films are emerging from both these countries.
As always, the festival is made possible because public institutions, foundations and private individuals support it with generous contributions. The festival team of the IAFFZ association has once again shown enormous commitment, and its volunteers have spent countless hours screening and preparing and are now working together with the teams from Filmpodium and Frame to make sure the festival is a success. We are very grateful to our fellow IAFFZ members, who have been loyal to us since 2008, for their support. Our partner festivals enable us to make new discoveries and expand our network. We owe them all a debt of gratitude, as well as to our guests who come to Zurich to present their films and discuss cinematic concerns. We wish you all exciting film experiences and enriching encounters at the 7th Arab Film Festival Zurich.

Animation Lab
As part of the 7th Arab Film Festival Zurich, an Animation Lab will take place for the first time. This new offering is of great importance as it aims to promote the financing, writing and enriching international exchange of animation film experiences in the Arab world and Switzerland. The Animation Lab at the AFFZ comprises two concentrated days during which the production and post-production phases of four carefully selected animation projects of any duration will be advanced. A professional jury will judge the submitted projects; prizes will be awarded in kind by postproduction providers from Switzerland and the Arab world. This Lab aims to serve as a catalyst for networking, cultural exchange, collaboration and funding opportunities, promoting professionalization and creating strong links between animation creators, studios and industry professionals in Switzerland and Arab countries.
The Lab is kindly supported by RoDo Works, Katara Studios, Concave Animation and the Zurich Film Foundation and was organized in collaboration with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), Fantoche and the Groupement Suisse du Film d'Animation (GSFA).
This industry event will take place on April 3 and 4 in the Filmpodium Lounge.
